Before Times: Drowning In A Sea Of White

1996 | Autumn | North Metro-Atlanta | North Cobb County | Pre-K

My people…

My bedrock…

Was taken from me.

Not all the time, but from like 6:00am-2:00pm when I had to go to school.

Born in 1993, I was put in private school in 1996.

For the first time my reality changed.

I used to blend in to a landscape of brown.

Now, I float alone in a sea of white.

Unknown territory…

In such a valley of death, I must rely on the words I was taught to guide me through such times and places.

As I do my best, I begin to get frustrated when I get a B in a subject.

I answer every question the teacher asks; when I am called on.

Excellence was(is) the goal.

1999 | First Grade

Another Day:Another ‘A’

At this point, I don’t really have any friends in school.

It didn’t matter to me.

I always felt like I was at school for business not for socializing.

I have a big family.

I had an even larger church family.

I had some friends in the neighborhood.

I didn’t feel like I needed anything else.

So I just went to school to do my best.

“You think you’re better than me?!”; some redhead boy in my class.

“What? What are you talking about?”

“You think you are better than me!!”, redhead boy.

“???”

Redhead boy storms off

Did he just try to bully me?
